October 3, 2011 High School Memories (1968)
The summer of love.
I think I’m in the running for being the elder in DS106 which may also make me the original hippy. OH instead of OG. Oh, and the best part is, my high school girlfriends and I still relive the memories each summer at some exotic place for a weekend. I’ve found it takes a collective to remember the past — even your own.
I was intrigued by the boy who had the cool car and a swimming pool. But seriously, the real reason was that he was very funny and not too hard on the eyes. My dad still loves him to this day although he never condoned the sneaking out at night. I made the matching pants. Steve made the car.

This is so awesome, and I love the idea of custom pants and a custom car. Was this on the tail end of the custom car culture of the 50s and early 60s? I always thought that was a potentially ool moment to frame the idea of DIY edtech.
Also, that image is awesome, and is this California?

It was taken in Seattle! I mean who has a swimming pool in Seattle? Occasionally we see the sun. I didn’t know anyone else who was making a custom car, so I don’t know about custom car culture.

That is an amazing car and those are awesome shorts! Reminds me of how my mother used to make my brother and I clothes, full on pants, shirts, suits, etc. Lots of crazy patterns bright colors, I’ll do my best to find some photos of grade school.
I’m with Jim that there was an amazing DIY spirit then. And I like thinking about garages and sewing rooms as emblems of a culture of self-sustained, life long learning.
Very cool.

oh no…. grade school? Now I’m talking b&w…. Michael, I love your comment about emblems of “making things” in garages and sewing rooms. You are absolutely right and I hadn’t thought of that. Garages and sewing rooms were the tinkering studios of the day. My grandmother made my prom dress and it was amazing.

It’s kind of cool to see that you still have pictures like this. What’s the Horsepower on that baby ahaha. Where was this taken?

Whoa! Serious flashes backs! Great shot from the day! However, I’m not sure you’re the only elder in this class; I graduated from high school in 1968; I think you’re a year or two behind me. And you were in Seattle? I graduated from Wenatchee High School. University of Washington Class of 1972…your post is a great moment of time travel–thank you!

Ditto! West Seattle HS 1968, UW 1972 and 77. That’s funny. I had a friend who used to called Wenatchee “Wena-snatchie”. But for the record, did he just make that up?

Wow, so nostalgic Kathy!
An amazing photo, such a good car which looks very fashionable for that time and you were so young. Time has passed but I can’t believe that pic is that old. Perhaps it reminds you many good memories.

Mohsen: that car was probably fashionable for the 1910’s. Or maybe its timeless.
